Transit Legend in Russia

This very busy mapcard shows the incredible Moscow Metro. Elena notes that it must be a rare card in my collection, but it just appears so. It is from a boxed postcard set called Wanderlust: 30 Postcards for Insatiable Travelers, and not at all rare. I’m quite thrilled to have it postmarked from Moscow, with lovely Russian postage.

There is a legend that the circle line in brown is the result of a coffee cup stain left by Stalin when he was shown the construction plans for proposed additions to the Metro. The story goes that Stalin looked at the plans, put his coffee cup down on them, and left without saying a word. The engineers picked up the coffee cup, saw the brown circle it left, and realized a circle line was just what the plans needed.

I like the idea of "insatiable travelers"...And the legend about the creation of that circle is really great too! An amazing post!

That is a truly great engineering story (or excellent communist propaganda depending on how you want to see it) but either way there's no denying how cool an image this is, made more so by Stalins circle too

I suspect it is more propaganda than fact, but I don't suppose we will ever know. I like the way "propaganda" sounds... sort of like how a native Bostonian (Massachusetts, USA) would say "proper gander," which would be a "genuine look," the total opposite of the word "propaganda." And I think I just found my contribution to rainbird's word project.

Your latest postcard is on the way. Hope you have your "trews" ready...
